Cura, a Calgary cleantech startup, has raised $10 million USD to advance its low-carbon cement technology. The company uses an electrochemical process to reduce emissions from cement production, which accounts for about seven percent of global emissions. The new funding will support hiring, a pilot plant in Taber, Alberta, and engineering for a larger commercial demonstration facility. The pilot, set to commission in early 2027, will produce 100 tonnes of cement per year using solar energy from a nearby farm. Cura aims to achieve up to 85 percent emissions reduction compared to traditional methods. The company also targets a production cost below $75 per tonne, which could make its technology competitive without relying on carbon pricing. Cura plans to retrofit existing cement plants by selling equipment, leveraging the industry's sunk assets. The funding round was led by Zacua Ventures with participation from several other investors.
