CURA Climate raises $10M for low-carbon cement pilot near Taber, Alberta
medicinehatnews.comCalgary-based CURA Climate Inc. has raised US$10 million to develop an electrochemical process that could cut cement-making emissions by up to 85%. The funding, led by Zacua Ventures, will support a 100-tonne-per-year pilot plant near Taber, Alberta, built with Grand Forks Concrete, plus engineering for a 30,000-tonne commercial demonstration facility. The process replaces high-temperature limestone calcination with electricity, producing a low-carbon calcium product and a concentrated CO2 stream for storage or use. The pilot, expected on site in January, will use agricultural waste as feedstock. CURA has also signed MOUs with ACCIONA, Aecon, and Titan Cement for future deployment. Cement accounts for about 8% of global CO2 emissions. This project is a concrete step toward industrial decarbonization in Alberta, with local involvement from the Torrey family and engineering by BBA.
