Cruise ship air pollution in Reykjavik: Black carbon levels 35-40 times WHO safe limits, shore power delayed until 2028

Air quality measurements in Reykjavik, Iceland show cruise ships like the Viking Mars and Sky Princess produce particle pollution 35-40 times higher than WHO safe levels. The measurements, taken by Dr. Kare Press-Kristensen of Green Global Future, found average concentrations of 35,000-40,000 particles per cubic centimeter in port, with peaks above 100,000. Black carbon from ship exhaust is both a health hazard and a potent climate pollutant that accelerates Arctic warming. Iceland plans to install shore power at the Sundahofn port by 2028, but currently only smaller vessels can plug in. Environmental groups are calling on Iceland to support the Danish-led polar fuels proposal at the IMO, ban scrubber water discharges, and establish green corridors. The Northeast Atlantic Emission Control Area adopted in May 2026 will reduce SOx and NOx but does not address black carbon, which requires switching to distillate fuels like marine gas oil.
