British garden retailer Crocus has launched Frasstastic Bio-mulch, a mulch made from insect frass and willow fibre. The frass comes from black soldier fly larvae fed spent brewery grains, and the willow comes from coppiced Salix alba grown on 17 sites in England. Crocus says the mix is 100% organic, UK sourced, and rated to last up to three years. The company says the mulch suppresses weeds and holds moisture while also feeding soil organisms as it breaks down. The frass adds nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and chitin, which can support plant defences and soil microbes. The willow chips are meant to interlock so less material is needed for an even layer. Frasstastic Bio-mulch is aimed at beds, borders, vegetable plots, and areas around trees and shrubs. It is sold through Crocus's website. No price or coverage details were included in the announcement.
