CRFM and Caribbean Climate Change Centre partner to tackle climate impacts on fisheries and blue carbon

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre have agreed to deepen their collaboration on climate adaptation. The partnership focuses on protecting fisheries and coastal ecosystems from warming oceans, sargassum seaweed influxes, and sea level rise. A key area is blue carbon, the carbon stored in mangroves and seagrass beds, which the groups see as a potential tool for climate mitigation and new revenue streams for the region. Both organizations also discussed improving marine spatial planning, expanding renewable energy use in fishing communities, and developing a regional Blue Carbon Policy. They stressed the need for better climate and marine data sharing to support decision making. The agreement reflects a push to turn environmental threats like sargassum into economic opportunities through circular economy approaches, while building long term resilience for Caribbean coastal populations.
