Cowboy Clean Fuels Sells First Durable Carbon Removal Credits via Salesforce-Backed Purchase
carboncredits.comCowboy Clean Fuels, a Wyoming company, sold its first durable carbon removal credits through a Salesforce-backed purchase arranged by Milkywire. The deal covers 500 tonnes from the company's Triangle Unit project, which is already operating in the Powder River Basin. Delivery is scheduled for 2026, making this a near-term sale from an existing project rather than a multi-year forward contract. Cowboy combines biomass carbon removal and storage with renewable natural gas production. Agricultural processing residues are injected into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs, where microbes break them down into methane and CO2. The methane is sold as RNG, while the CO2 stays attached to the coal. The credits were verified under the Absolute Carbon Standard and listed on the Evident registry. The volume is small compared with the wider CDR market, but the project is notable because it is already injecting and selling verified credits. The bigger questions are whether the coal seams keep accepting biomass at scale, whether feedstock supplies stay sustainable, and whether the storage can be monitored over the long term. Those factors will determine whether BiCRS becomes a meaningful removal pathway or stays a niche.
