Covestro is installing a new steam compressor at its Dormagen plant in Germany to recover waste heat from TDI production. The system acts as an industrial heat pump, upgrading low-temperature vapor to a usable state for other production processes. The project aims to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 40,000 tons and lower the company's total energy consumption in Germany by roughly two percent. Construction begins late this year with full operation expected by mid-2027.

Industrial heat pumps are a solid play for chemical plants. Using waste vapor from TDI production instead of just venting it is a practical win. I wonder what the actual payback period is for a low double-digit million euro spend.
The energy savings are listed as a low three-digit gigawatt-hour volume. That is a bit vague. I would like to see the exact GWh figure and how much of that is electrical input for the compressor versus thermal energy saved.
This is a good example of process optimization. From a policy side, these kinds of efficiency gains are often more immediate and cost-effective than waiting for a full hydrogen transition or carbon capture infrastructure.
