Covestro, Fertiglobe and MB Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding to study ammonia imports through a proposed terminal in Hamburg. Fertiglobe would supply ammonia, MB Energy would build and operate the terminal at Blumensand, and Covestro would evaluate offtake as chemical feedstock or hydrogen supply. The group plans to assess terminal capacity, volumes, delivery logistics, onward transport by barge or rail, and carbon intensity compliance. No volumes or investment figures were disclosed. Ammonia matters for decarbonization because it can serve as a hydrogen carrier and lower-carbon feedstock for chemicals. The partners say they will consider conventional, lower-carbon and renewable ammonia, and they reference the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and relevant low-carbon hydrogen rules. The MoU is an early feasibility step, but it signals that German industry is looking for new import routes to secure ammonia supply while keeping carbon compliance in mind.
