Covestro, Fertiglobe, and MB Energy signed a memorandum of understanding to explore an ammonia import, storage, and distribution chain through a proposed MB Energy terminal at Blumensand in Hamburg. Fertiglobe would supply ammonia, Covestro would act as an industrial offtaker for chemical production and hydrogen needs, and MB Energy would handle infrastructure and logistics. The partners plan to evaluate conventional, lower-carbon, and renewable ammonia options, including carbon intensity and compliance with the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and low-carbon hydrogen rules. The deal matters because ammonia is both a chemical feedstock and a hydrogen carrier, and Europe needs new supply routes that can lower the carbon footprint of industrial production. The MoU is still early stage, and key details like terminal capacity, volumes, delivery timelines, and the actual carbon intensity of the ammonia have not been disclosed. The outcome will depend on infrastructure costs, certification standards, and whether industrial customers commit to long-term offtake agreements.
