Covestro, Fertiglobe and MB Energy signed a memorandum of understanding to explore ammonia supply through a proposed import terminal at Blumensand in Hamburg. Fertiglobe, a major seaborne exporter of urea and ammonia, would supply the terminal and may take an equity stake. Covestro would evaluate offtake of ammonia as chemical feedstock or hydrogen supply. The group will study terminal capacity, volumes, delivery logistics and onward transport by pipeline, barge or rail. They also plan to assess conventional, lower-carbon and renewable ammonia, including carbon intensity and compliance with frameworks such as the EU CBAM. For European chemical buyers, the deal points to a growing push to diversify ammonia sourcing and build import infrastructure for lower-carbon feedstock. Whether it moves beyond the MoU stage depends on terminal financing, permitting and firm offtake agreements.
