Cover crops open day at Teagasc Oak Park to showcase benefits for spring barley and soil carbon
agriland.ieTeagasc is hosting a cover crops open day at Oak Park, Co. Carlow on Friday, October 30. The event will show results from trials run with Boortmalt on using cover crops in spring barley systems, including improvements to soil health, lower nitrate leaching, and more carbon stored in the soil. Visitors can see 28 cover crop species planted at different times and with different establishment methods. Teagasc has tested sowing before harvest, on harvest day, and after harvest, including using drones to spread seed through the standing barley crop. The open day also covers soil health and quality. Cover crop establishment is supported under ACRES and the Water European Innovation Partnership schemes. The trials are relevant for tillage farmers looking to meet environmental goals while keeping spring barley production practical.
