Cotton Farmers in India to Earn Carbon Credits Through Regenerative Agriculture MoU
deccanchronicle.comThe Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has signed an MoU with the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) and Merago Inc. to develop carbon credit projects based on regenerative farming. Cotton farmers will adopt practices like biochar and compost production to improve soil health and sequester carbon. The initiative aims to provide farmers with additional income from carbon credit sales while advancing sustainable cotton production in India. Carbon credits will be developed and verified under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and India's carbon market regulations. A share of verified removals will be certified for sale in domestic and international markets, with proceeds distributed among CITI, ICAC, and participating farmers. The project will use Merago's digital platform for implementation and carbon asset management, while CITI CDRA handles farmer engagement.
