Cotierra raises $3M to scale decentralized biochar in coffee, cocoa, cotton and citrus
agnavigator.comSwiss climate tech company Cotierra has raised $3 million to expand its decentralized biochar production for tropical agriculture. The round was co-led by PINC, Paulig's venture arm, and Carbon Removal Partners, bringing Cotierra's total funding to about $4.75 million. The company turns coffee waste and other crop residue into biochar using small reactors placed near farms, then returns the material to soil to improve fertility and cut fertilizer use. Cotierra says the approach also supports carbon removal and supply chain emissions reductions. Its digital platform tracks production and application with IoT sensors, which helps with verification. After proving the model in coffee, the company plans to expand into cocoa, cotton, and citrus. Investors pointed to commercial traction with coffee traders as a key reason for backing the round, not just the carbon credit potential.
