Cotierra Raises $3M to Scale Decentralized Biochar for Farmer Productivity and Carbon Removal
farmersreviewafrica.comZurich-based climate tech firm Cotierra has secured $3 million in funding to commercialize its decentralized biochar systems, bringing total funding to about $4.75 million. The round, co-led by PINC and Carbon Removal Partners, will help the company move from pilots to multi-year deployments, starting with coffee and expanding into cocoa, cotton, and citrus. The technology converts agricultural residues into biochar near where they are generated, returning carbon to soil while improving productivity and resilience. Cotierra's approach addresses two problems at once: unused biomass in tropical value chains and declining soil health. By turning waste into biochar, the company helps farmers boost yields while creating verifiable carbon removal. The digital platform tracks production and outcomes, which is key for supply-chain emission reductions. With a strong order backlog, Cotierra is now scaling its hardware and software package across regions.
