CORSIA at 10: IATA calls on governments to strengthen aviation carbon offset framework
biomassmagazine.comThe International Air Transport Association is marking ten years since the ICAO assembly resolution that created CORSIA, the first global market-based measure for an industrial sector. The scheme was adopted in 2016 as a follow-up to the Paris Agreement and now has more than 130 participating countries. By the end of this year, CORSIA is expected to have offset roughly 200 million metric tons of CO2, with coverage projected to reach about 85 percent of global aviation emissions from 2027. IATA says the framework could mobilize up to $120 billion in climate finance for emissions reduction and carbon removal projects by the end of the scheme. The association is pressing governments to maintain broad participation and consistent implementation. The main ask is to reinforce the foundations of CORSIA so it continues to channel finance into real emissions cuts while keeping a level playing field for airlines.
