Corrour Research Centre Opens with University of St Andrews for 100-Year Climate and Land Partnership
thesaintnewspaper.co.ukThe Corrour Research Centre has opened on a 57,000-acre estate near Fort William, giving the University of St Andrews a permanent base for fieldwork on peatland restoration, woodland regeneration, and sustainable land management. The facility includes 24 beds, a field laboratory, and conference spaces, and was built using timber sourced from Corrour's own forest. Power comes from the estate's hydro-electric schemes, keeping day-to-day operations low carbon. The project sits inside a 100-year partnership between the university and Corrour. The partners estimate that nature-based carbon offsets from woodland and avoided emissions from restored peatland could deliver around 100,000 tonnes of CO2e, which the university plans to use against unavoidable emissions as part of its goal to reach net zero by 2035. The centre also supports student internships and interdisciplinary research, with teaching programmes still being developed.
