1,180 MWh a year across 12 sites is decent for a trust this size. Works out to about 98 MWh per site average, which suggests mid sized rooftop arrays mostly. The 223 tonne CO2 claim seems to use the UK grid average factor, around 0.19 kg/kWh. That checks out. Good to see actual numbers in a local story.

Worth noting they had to upgrade distribution systems to connect safely. That is the part most articles skip. Grid interconnection at the distribution level can be a bottleneck for smaller commercial solar. If the trust had to isolate power across mental health sites, there may have been some load management constraints. Would be curious what the upgrade cost was relative to the grant.

The backlog maintenance mention is a hidden win. If they fixed electrical infrastructure as part of the solar connection work, that is basically free grid hardening. Hospitals often have outdated switchgear. Combining solar install with essential upgrades reduces the marginal cost of both. That is the kind of bundling more public estates should do.

The Great British Energy Scheme grant is the interesting policy piece here. This is public money going directly into public sector solar, which avoids the subsidy complexity of the commercial route. Direct grant means no PPA negotiation, no tax equity stacking. Faster deployment but less private capital leverage. Would like to see the grant amount per MWh to compare efficiency with CfD or RHI style programs.

Also worth noting these are NHS sites, so the carbon savings count toward the public sector net zero target. The NHS has a legal obligation to reach net zero by 2040 for direct emissions. Every MWh of onsite solar reduces grid purchased electricity and Scope 2 emissions. 223 tonnes a year is small in absolute terms but every bit helps when you are a trust with an old building stock.
