The COP30 presidency is drafting a roadmap for transitioning away from fossil fuels that will consider the needs of economies heavily reliant on oil, gas, and coal. The plan, first proposed by Brazil's president, aims to balance climate goals with different levels of development and energy access. Input has been gathered from over 115 countries and 247 non-state actors. The roadmap identifies four main levers: reforming international finance to link debt relief with transition efforts, boosting clean technology sharing, improving global cooperation on trade and investment, and prioritizing a just transition for fossil fuel dependent nations. Key barriers include structural imbalances in global finance, continued investment in fossil projects, and geopolitical conflicts. The presidency plans to unveil the final roadmap at COP31 in Turkey. The topic of electrification, proposed as a global goal to reach 35% of final energy consumption by 2035, will also be a central focus at the next summit.
