Carbon Brief has published an interactive tracker for the COP17 biodiversity summit in Yerevan, Armenia, running from 19 to 30 October. The tool tracks dozens of draft negotiating texts under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, including the Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols. It uses a color-coded bracket count to show how far parties are from consensus, which is useful for following where talks are stuck. The summit marks the halfway point to the 2030 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and countries are currently off track on 22 of 23 targets. Two agenda items will dominate: the global review of progress and finance. The finance debate, especially the push by global south countries for a separate CBD financial mechanism, already suspended COP16 once and could shape whether Yerevan ends with real commitments or just more negotiation.
