The Convex Seascape Survey is a five year global study analyzing how ocean seabed sediments contribute to climate change mitigation. By collecting sediment samples from continental shelves, researchers aim to quantify the amount of organic carbon stored in the sea floor and how human activities impact these stores. Findings from the project could lead to new protections against destructive practices like bottom trawling. Unlike mangroves or seagrass, marine sediment is not yet recognized in global blue carbon policy frameworks, making this data critical for future emissions policies and environmental protections.
