The gap here is in the accounting standards. If tree loss is not mandated in the project level carbon budget, developers will treat it as an externality. We need reporting that treats a felled mature tree as a direct carbon emission.
True, but the real issue is the cost of relocation. Moving a mature tree is expensive and risky. Most site managers just clear the land because it is faster and cheaper, then tick a box for planting saplings that usually die anyway.
I see this with substation and transmission line easements too. They clear-cut the corridor and call it mitigation. Does anyone actually track the survival rate of these replacement plantings over a ten year window?
Basically saying that net zero targets look great on a spreadsheet until you realize the land clearing is erasing the gains. The mismatch between planting a sapling and losing a 50 year old oak is massive.
