Constellation invests in Blue Energy to speed up small modular reactor deployment in the U.S.
carboncredits.comConstellation Energy's venture arm has invested in Blue Energy, a Texas-based startup that plans to build small modular reactors using shipyard manufacturing and robotic fabrication. The goal is to deploy the GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 reactor, a 300 MW design that can provide carbon-free baseload electricity faster than traditional nuclear construction. Constellation operates the largest nuclear fleet in the U.S., with 21 reactors across 12 sites. The company sees rising electricity demand from AI data centers and industrial electrification as a driver for new nuclear capacity. Blue Energy's approach aims to reduce project risk and attract infrastructure investors by prefabricating reactor sections off-site. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. This marks Constellation Technology Ventures' first investment in a U.S.-based SMR developer. The deal highlights growing corporate interest in advanced nuclear as a complement to renewables for grid decarbonization.
