Constellation Energy signed a 20 year power purchase agreement with Google covering 3.59 GW of nuclear generation. The deal includes 890 MW from upgraded output at 11 existing reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, plus 2,700 MW from Constellation's current fleet over 15 years. Constellation plans to invest over $4.3 billion in facility improvements to deliver the new capacity. Bloomberg pegs the contract value around $1 billion. The deal is part of a broader wave of nuclear PPAs with major tech companies. Constellation already signed similar agreements with Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta as data center operators race to secure carbon-free, 24/7 power. Morgan Stanley projects that up to 34% of U.S. data center power needs could go unmet by 2028. Nuclear is one of the few sources that can run around the clock without carbon emissions, which makes these long-term contracts a key test for how clean energy procurement handles AI-driven load growth.
