Congo Basin lakes release ancient carbon from peatlands: new study findings

The study highlights how tropical peatlands, which cover only 3 to 5 percent of global land surface, play a major role in carbon storage. Understanding how carbon moves from peat into lakes and then into the air helps scientists refine climate models. The findings come from sediment and water samples taken directly from the lakes, making the data concrete and field-verified.
