Compound Climate Extremes May Require Lower Carbon Budgets

A new study published in Nature suggests that compound climate events, such as simultaneous heat and drought, increase more rapidly with cumulative CO2 emissions than previously thought. This indicates that current carbon budgets for 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius may be too lenient to prevent severe weather patterns. Researchers found that while common extremes increase linearly, rarer and more severe compound events escalate sharply. This data suggests a need for more aggressive emissions targets to account for the disproportionate impact of these combined climate stressors on ecosystems and society.
