Common Lane railway bridge removal: OLE clearance and electrification notes for engineers
geomechanics.ioCommon Lane railway bridge at Church Fenton, North Yorkshire, is being removed this weekend as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade. The life-expired structure sits over the operational railway and has to come out to give enough clearance for 25kV overhead line equipment. The replacement deck will provide the higher electrical and structural clearances needed for future electrification on this corridor. For engineers, the main risks are possession planning and lift sequencing. Heavy crane lifts over recently isolated track need exclusion zones and precise coordination with track and OLE designers. Temporary works also have to protect the railway and keep road approaches stable while the old deck is removed. Interface management with adjacent TRU civils and systems packages is critical to avoid rework. The wider TRU programme is already testing lower carbon concrete at Shipley Depot, and similar replacement structures in North Yorkshire may be expected to use lower clinker mixes to support UK rail decarbonisation targets.
