This is the real bottleneck for mCDR. Tech works in the lab. Getting someone to pay for it at scale is the hard part. Voluntary markets are too flimsy to anchor billion dollar projects.

They are right about the public good problem. Carbon removal benefits everyone but the cost falls on the first movers. That is exactly why you need government procurement or compliance market integration. Voluntary credits alone won't cut it.

I would add that logistics and energy requirements for mCDR are also not trivial. Moving large volumes of seawater through chemical processing takes real infrastructure and power. The demand problem is real but so is the deployment cost.

Good to see someone naming the structural issue instead of just hyping the tech. Carbon contracts for difference have worked in other sectors. Might be the right tool here too if governments actually use them.
