Colorado's Clean Air Programme has awarded New York-based Vycarb $2.7 million to deploy its carbon management technology at a wastewater treatment site. The system converts CO2 into dissolved bicarbonate using water and calcium- or magnesium-bearing minerals, with sensors verifying carbon storage in real time. Wastewater plants produce biogenic CO2 from organic breakdown, making them a steady source for capture. The grant covers site selection and finalization, not full deployment. Colorado has invested over $73 million in industrial emissions reduction since 2023 and aims for net-zero by 2050. The technology could offer a verifiable, mineral-based approach to carbon removal, though questions remain about mineral sourcing and long-term stability of stored carbon.
