Colchester Institute Cuts Carbon Emissions 55% Since 2020 With Solar Panels and Salix Retrofit
gazette-news.co.ukColchester Institute has reduced its carbon emissions by 55% since 2020-21, reaching 760 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2025-26. That is a 31% drop from the previous year, even while 16-19 student numbers rose by more than 15% over the same period. The college hit its near-term 50% reduction target four years ahead of schedule. The cuts come from a mix of on-site renewables and building retrofits. The college installed 972 solar panels across its Colchester and Braintree campuses, covering about 15% of its electricity use. A £3.7 million Salix Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme grant supported a £6 million retrofit of the main campus in 2022. Sustainability is also embedded in the curriculum, with Sustainable Development Goals mapped across every subject. Low-carbon construction, energy-efficient engineering, and sustainable procurement are now part of teaching. The college is working toward net zero through a 50-point carbon reduction plan and a new Environmental and Sustainability Strategy approved in 2025.
