Colas Rail UK plans to roll out hydrogen-powered Engine Carbon Clean across its tamper fleet after successful trials. The process pipes oxyhydrogen gas through the air intake to remove carbon build-up, improving combustion and cutting fuel use by 13% at their Rugby depot. The company estimates fleet-wide deployment will save around 550 tonnes of CO2e annually, supporting its Science Based Targets commitment to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46.5% by 2030. The move focuses on improving efficiency of existing assets rather than early replacement, which aligns with broader sustainability goals in rail. It highlights a practical, low-cost abatement option for heavy diesel equipment.
