Colas Rail Cuts Scope 1 Emissions by 13% with Hydrogen Engine Carbon Clean on Tamper Fleet
azocleantech.comColas Rail UK has deployed hydrogen-powered engine carbon cleaning across its 31 tamper fleet after trials showed over 13% savings in fuel and CO2e emissions. The company is the first to adopt a subscription model where they own the generators and perform the cleaning themselves, integrating it into routine maintenance. Annual projections suggest over 550 tons of CO2e saved per year across the fleet, supporting their Science Based Targets initiative goal of a 46.5% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. The technology, from Engine Carbon Clean, removes carbon buildup inside diesel engines using oxyhydrogen gas, improving combustion efficiency and allowing lower RPMs for the same work. Colas is also expanding trials to Class 37 locomotives, which could cut an additional 2,800 tons of CO2 annually. This approach offers a practical, low-intrusion way to extend the life of existing assets while meeting near-term decarbonization targets, a model worth watching for other rail and heavy equipment operators.
