Cobalt Catalyst Replaces Precious Metals for 99% Yield Hydrogenation Using Water and Electricity
scitechdaily.comResearchers at Yokohama National University developed a cobalt catalyst that hydrogenates pyridine and other nitrogen-containing compounds using water and electricity, achieving over 99% yield in lab tests. The catalyst works by balancing metallic cobalt and cobalt oxide during electrolysis, replacing platinum group metals that are costly and supply constrained. The work matters for low-carbon chemical manufacturing because electrocatalytic hydrogenation can use renewable electricity instead of fossil-derived hydrogen gas. The team also demonstrated an intermittent electrolysis method for gram-scale conversion with 89% yield. Still at research stage, with durability and energy consumption data yet to be published.
