Coastal soil carbon storage estimates may be wrong due to human activity, study finds

Researchers collected 1,230 soil samples from 123 profiles in China's Jiangsu coastal zone, measuring organic carbon and bulk density at 10 cm intervals down to one meter. They found that the predictable negative correlation between soil organic carbon and bulk density breaks down in areas disturbed by agriculture, aquaculture, and urban development. This means pedotransfer functions developed for undisturbed terrestrial soils may significantly misestimate carbon stocks in coastal blue carbon ecosystems that are actively managed or developed. The study has direct implications for carbon markets and climate policy. If coastal carbon stocks are being overestimated or underestimated due to flawed accounting methods, then the value of blue carbon credits and the effectiveness of nature-based climate solutions could be misrepresented. The researchers call for site-specific bulk density measurements in coastal zones rather than relying on generalized equations.
