Coal-to-Premium Carbon Materials Technology Promoted at Taiyuan Conference: Low-Carbon Innovation
manilatimes.netA new coal liquefaction process developed by Zhaoqing Shunxin Coal Chemical Industry Technology Co., Ltd. and Guangdong Coal-based Carbon Materials Research Co., Ltd. was promoted at an industry conference in Taiyuan, China. The technology converts coal into premium carbon materials like carbon foam, carbon fiber, and 3D graphene, cutting CO2 emissions by about 2 tons per ton of coal processed. It operates under mild conditions and produces virtually no waste gas, wastewater, or solid residue. The process uses quantum chemistry to classify coal molecules, turning low-energy bonds into oil and gas and high-energy bonds into condensed-ring pitch. This pitch, with 80% aromatic structures and 0.01% ash, serves as feedstock for high-value materials. The technology has been assessed as internationally leading by a Chinese expert panel, which recommended accelerating commercialization. For carbon markets and climate policy, this represents a shift from coal as a polluting fuel to a precision feedstock for advanced materials. The economic gain is significant, moving coal from hundreds of yuan per ton to tens of thousands. If scaled, it could reduce emissions from coal use while creating new revenue streams, though real-world deployment timelines and costs remain to be seen.
