CNPC Passes 13 Million Tons of CO2 Injected in CCUS-EOR Push
carbonherald.comChina's CNPC has now injected more than 13 million metric tons of CO2 into oilfields, a figure the company says is over 60% of all injections across China's petroleum sector. Most of that volume goes through carbon capture, utilization, and storage for enhanced oil recovery, or CCUS-EOR. In the first half of 2026 alone, CNPC injected 1.37 million tons, up 14.2% year on year. The company says it is moving CCUS from pilot stage to commercial scale and plans to build industrial CCUS clusters during China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026 to 2030). Those clusters would connect carbon management with renewable power and clean thermal energy. China now hosts more than 120 CCUS demonstration projects, while global operational carbon capture capacity is estimated at 73 million tons per year.
