CMA CGM Launches Wind-Powered Transatlantic Cargo Service with NEOLINE, Cutting Emissions Up to 90%
logistics-manager.comCMA CGM has partnered with NEOLINE to offer wind-powered transatlantic cargo shipping aboard the NEOLINER ORIGIN, a 136-meter Ro-Ro vessel equipped with 3,000 square meters of solid sails. The ship can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 80 to 90% compared to conventional vessels on the same route. The service connects Zeebrugge, Montoir-de-Bretagne, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Baltimore, and Halifax, and CMA CGM customers can book space through their digital platforms. This is a practical step toward decarbonizing ocean freight, though the actual reduction depends on weather and route conditions. The vessel handles dry containers, rolling stock, refrigerated units, and out-of-gauge cargo, making it versatile for industrial shippers. If scaled and verified, this model could help companies meet scope 3 emissions targets, but the industry will need clear accounting and more ships to make a real impact.
