CMA CGM completes world's largest single-batch biomethanol bunkering with 8,016 tonnes at Shanghai Port
logistics-manager.comCMA CGM has completed the world's largest single-batch biomethanol bunkering at Shanghai Port, loading 8,016 tonnes onto the 13,000-TEU dual-fuel vessel CMA CGM OSMIUM. The fuel came from Shanghai Electric's green methanol project in Taonan, Jilin Province, and was delivered through Dalian Port. CMA CGM says the volume covers the full Shanghai to East Coast South America voyage and avoids roughly 10,000 tonnes of CO2 compared with conventional marine fuels. Shipping lines are betting on biomethanol as a lower-carbon option for dual-fuel engines, but supply remains the bottleneck. This operation matters because it links actual production in Northeast China to a major container hub, which is the part many methanol announcements skip. The carbon intensity of the fuel depends on the feedstock and production process, so verification standards will determine whether the claimed savings hold. The scale is notable: ship-to-ship bunkering of 8,000 tonnes is not a pilot. It shows ports and carriers can handle methanol logistics at commercial size. The next questions are whether production capacity can scale without straining biomass supply, and how biomethanol pricing compares with conventional marine fuels.
