Japan Airlines is buying carbon removal credits from Climeworks under a deal designed to meet CORSIA rules for international aviation. The portfolio includes soil carbon, biochar, and direct air capture credits. Climeworks says this is the first CORSIA-compliant carbon removal purchase agreement. CORSIA requires airlines to keep emissions from international flights below 85% of 2019 levels, using sustainable aviation fuel or carbon credits. Climeworks sees this as a shift from voluntary to compliance markets. The deal size and duration were not disclosed, but Climeworks previously signed similar agreements with Lufthansa and British Airways.
