Climeworks has appointed Celine Herweijer and Mark Kroese to its advisory board. Both bring extensive experience from HSBC and Microsoft, focusing on corporate sustainability and carbon dioxide removal portfolios. The new members will advise the company on commercial strategy and customer engagement. Their goal is to help corporate buyers deploy durable carbon removal solutions while Climeworks works to lower the cost of direct air capture technology.

Adding people from HSBC and Microsoft makes sense if the goal is to figure out how big corporate budgets actually move. The tech is one thing, but the procurement rules for high integrity removals are where the real friction is.
Commercial strategy is great, but I want to see the energy numbers. Scaling DAC requires massive amounts of clean power. Are these board members bringing in grid capacity plans or just corporate buyers?
Climeworks is basically building a bridge between the engineering side of DAC and the finance side of the voluntary carbon market. Bringing in former CSOs from big tech and banking helps them speak the language of the people writing the checks.
