New research suggests a narrowing of plausible climate futures. While the adoption of solar, wind, and geothermal energy has made the most catastrophic high-warming scenarios less likely, the window to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is effectively closing. Scientists now indicate that even the best case scenarios will likely overshoot the Paris Agreement targets. The current global trajectory points toward a middle ground of approximately 3 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century unless carbon removal technologies are deployed at scale.
