New research indicates a narrowing of plausible climate futures. While the rapid adoption of solar, wind, and geothermal energy has reduced the likelihood of the most catastrophic high-warming scenarios, progress has not been fast enough to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target set by the Paris Agreement. Scientists now suggest that the world is on a path toward roughly 3 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century. Even the most optimistic updated scenarios now exceed the 1.5C mark, shifting the focus toward mitigating the effects of inevitable warming.
