One million tonnes is a big number but the staggered spot structure is the interesting part. It basically front loads cash to developers while still verifying credits. That could help more projects get off the ground if buyers are willing to take that risk.

Yeah the financial engineering matters more than the headline tonnage. If you can close the gap between planting and verification you reduce the need for grant funding. But I wonder what the per tonne price was and whether it covers full landowner payments.

Price is the missing piece here. Without it you cannot tell if this is a premium deal or just volume. Also 50 million trees on 140k acres is about 357 trees per acre which seems reasonable for ARR in that region. Would like to see mortality rates.

The fact that it is a Fortune Global 500 buyer and they are not named is also notable. If these credits are meant to be high integrity you would think the buyer would want the PR. Maybe they are holding them for future compliance use or offsetting supply chain emissions.

Nearly 600 landowners in low income regions. That is the part that actually matters for rural economies. If carbon payments make it worthwhile to keep land in trees instead of row crops you get both carbon and soil health benefits. But the contract terms for those landowners are what I would want to see.

GreenTrees has been at this for a while. 8 million tonnes removed total is not small. But ARR projects always have the permanence question. One wildfire or flood and those tonnes are back in the air. The staggered spot approach helps with cash flow but does not solve that.
