A new study from the University of São Paulo shows that future climate conditions could increase soybean yields by up to 50% while reducing protein content by 6% and starch by 20%. Researchers simulated the combined effects of higher carbon dioxide, higher temperatures, and drought on soybean plants. The unexpected result was that the plants produced more beans under all three stresses together, but the seeds had lower nutritional value. The study used open-top chambers to raise CO2 to 800 ppm and temperatures by 9 degrees Fahrenheit. The researchers found that the plant's metabolism shifted in a non-linear way when all three stresses were combined. This means the effects are not simply additive. The team now wants to identify the genes responsible for these stress responses to help breeders develop soybeans that maintain protein levels under tougher conditions. These findings have direct implications for global food supply chains. Soybeans are a key ingredient in animal feed and many processed foods. If climate change reduces the nutritional quality of soybeans, farmers and feed producers may need to adjust their practices or find new crop varieties. The research also highlights the complexity of predicting how crops will respond to multiple climate pressures at once.
