The optic lobes and optic tract shrank by 52 percent and 62 percent respectively, which likely explains the reduced hunting behavior observed in earlier studies. This research adds to growing evidence that ocean acidification from absorbed atmospheric CO2 harms marine life beyond shell-building creatures. Squids are highly intelligent animals with neuron counts similar to dogs, and the brain shrinkage could affect their ability to hunt, cooperate, and learn.
