A North East firm, Cleveland Steel & Tubes, has published a free guide to help housebuilders and self-builders use reused structural steel in domestic projects. The guide covers regulatory compliance, specifying reused steel, reworking materials, and managing delivery and installation. The company says reused steel can cut carbon emissions by up to 97% and reduce costs by up to 60% compared to new steel. The guide aims to expand the market for steel reuse beyond major commercial projects like sports stadia and into individual homes. Cleveland Steel has already supplied reused steel for London's Olympic stadia and Canary Wharf's Wood Wharf. The company notes that reused steel can be certified through materials testing reports, addressing common misconceptions about quality and safety. The move comes as steel production remains a high-carbon process, with CO2 emissions reaching up to 2,400 kg per tonne. The guide is available for free download on the company's website and was launched at the Circular Steel UK event in London.

Steel is a massive chunk of embodied carbon in buildings. Any move to reuse it at scale in housing is a win. Would be good to see lifecycle analysis data from actual projects using this guide.
