Clean Energy Sells $30.7M in Tax Credits from RNG Portfolio, Strengthening Low-Carbon Fuel Economics
chemanalyst.comClean Energy Fuels has sold $30.7 million in federal tax credits tied to seven dairy-based renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities, including a $26 million investment tax credit for its South Fork Dairy project in Texas. The deal is the company's fourth such monetization, converting incentives like the Section 45Z clean fuel production credit into immediate cash to support project expansion and liquidity. The seven facilities produced about 2.7 million gallons of negative-carbon-intensity RNG in 2025, and Clean Energy reported RNG sales of 67.4 million gallons in Q1 2026, up 33% year over year. By selling credits rather than carrying them, Clean Energy improves project-level returns without relying on future tax liability, a strategy that could encourage more investment in dairy RNG and related infrastructure. The move also highlights how federal incentives are becoming a key revenue stream for renewable fuel producers.
