Clean Energy Fuels completed a $30.7 million sale of federal tax credits tied to seven renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities. The deal includes a $26 million investment tax credit from its South Fork Dairy project in Texas, the largest such credit the company has sold, plus all of its 2025 Section 45Z clean fuel production credits. The seven dairy-based RNG sites span Texas, South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota, and produced 2.7 million gallons of negative carbon-intensity RNG during 2025. This is the company's fourth monetization of RNG tax credits, with projects developed directly and through joint ventures with bp and TotalEnergies. By selling these credits, Clean Energy converts federal incentives into immediate cash, reducing reliance on its own tax liability. The RNG captures methane from dairy manure that would otherwise escape to the atmosphere, yielding fuel with negative lifecycle carbon intensity for commercial fleets. The buyer was not disclosed. The transaction highlights how federal tax incentives like the ITC and 45Z support renewable fuel infrastructure. For fleet operators and investors, it shows a practical path to funding methane capture projects while supplying lower-carbon transportation fuel. Clean Energy's expanded RNG production and its fueling network continue to offer an alternative to diesel for heavy-duty trucks, refuse vehicles, and transit buses.
