Clean Energy completes Idaho dairy RNG facility, expanding US renewable natural gas supply for trucking

Clean Energy has finished construction on its eighth dairy renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Jerome, Idaho, in partnership with East Valley Cattle. The site uses six anaerobic digesters to capture methane from over 35,000 dairy cows, processing more than 5 million gallons of manure daily. The resulting pipeline-quality RNG has a negative carbon intensity and is injected into the interstate natural gas network for use as transportation fuel. The project has received approval under the EPA Renewable Fuel Standard and California LCFS program, allowing for RIN generation and LCFS credits. Byproducts like solids are reused as livestock bedding and fertilizer. Clean Energy notes that agriculture accounts for about 10% of US greenhouse gas emissions, while transportation contributes roughly 28%, making dairy RNG a dual offset strategy.
