ClassNK Launches World's First Shipbuilding Carbon Footprint Notation for Scope 3 Emissions
marinelink.comClassification society ClassNK has introduced a new notation, 'a-EA (CFP)', to certify that greenhouse gas emissions from ship construction have been calculated and verified by a third party. This is the first notation of its kind globally, aimed at helping shipyards, shipowners, and shipping companies demonstrate environmental value and improve Scope 3 emissions disclosure. The notation follows ISO 14067 standards for carbon footprint calculation. It allows shipyards to show use of low-carbon materials and emission reduction measures during construction, moving beyond default emission factors. For shipowners, it supports more accurate reporting of Scope 3 Category 2 capital goods emissions, which is increasingly important as supply-chain decarbonization gains traction.
