ClassNK introduces first notation for GHG emissions from ship construction, enabling verified carbon footprint data for Scope 3 reporting

ClassNK has added the world's first notation, labeled a-EA (CFP), to make greenhouse gas emissions from ship construction visible and verifiable. The notation indicates that the carbon footprint generated during shipbuilding has been calculated and undergone third-party verification in line with ISO 14067. Shipyards can use it to demonstrate use of low-carbon materials and emission reduction measures, while shipowners and shipping companies can rely on verified data for more accurate Scope 3 Category 2 (capital goods) disclosures. The move responds to growing demand for supply chain emissions transparency. Without such verification, emissions from ship construction are often estimated using default factors that miss actual reduction efforts. By obtaining the notation, companies can externally prove environmental value. ClassNK revised its Environmental Guidelines (Edition 4.2) to include this framework, supporting better carbon accounting across the maritime value chain.
